Introduction
A case study of a 24-year-old male presented with memory difficulties and slurred speech following multiple concussions over the last 10-15 years. Suspected post-concussion syndrome in this case study.
Examination and Diagnosis
History examination revealed decreased frontal lobe function, decrease in semantic memory and memory recall, and slight cognitive impairment.
Treatment
Patient was put on a high dose of DHA and turmeric. In addition, the patient underwent 6 weeks of neurological rehab and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Treatment consisted of interactive metronome, neuronal sensory integration therapies, and cognitive, balance and frontal lobe activation exercises.
Results
At the re-examination, the patient stated that he has not had any memory difficulties, no slurred speech and that he feels back to normal. Patient was given a home exercise routine to maintain his progress. Patient was monitored once a month for 3 months after the initial course of treatment. Objectively, improvement in frontal lobe function, memory and cognition were observed.
Conclusion
Functional neurological care, supplementation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of post-concussion syndrome. Every patient requires an individualized approach and targeted treatment to achieve optimal results. Please contact us for more information.
