A 55-year-old female presented to CFNC with chief complaints of dizziness, severe right knee pain, and tongue numbness when eating or smelling food. She described her dizziness as feeling as though she was on a boat. Her knee pain worsened after driving for more than 10 minutes. She characterized it as sharp and stabbing, especially while driving, and noted crepitus with movement. On a scale of 1 to 10, she rated her dizziness at 4/10, knee pain at 9/10, and tongue numbness at 6/10.
Examination Findings
Upon examination, we observed several notable findings. The patient exhibited dysmetria when performing motor tasks, such as rapid alternating movements. Additionally, her eye movement reaction times were slow when attempting to jump to a target. We also noted a right drift of her eyes in darkness.
Treatment Plan
The patient underwent neurological rehabilitation twice a week for five weeks. Our treatment plan included a variety of therapies designed to address her specific symptoms. These therapies consisted of:
Eye movement retraining exercises
Vestibular rehabilitation
Gyrostim therapy
Peripheral nerve stimulation
Bemer therapy
Red/near infrared light therapy
Use of the Gladiator mat
Progress and Results
At the re-examination, the patient reported significant improvements. She no longer felt like she was on a boat. Her dizziness was rated at 1/10 at its worst, and she experienced many days without any dizziness. On average, her knee pain was rated between 0 and 1/10, and her tongue numbness was rated at 0/10. Remarkably, she has been able to resume her exercise regimen.
