  • Case Study: Autism: 9-Year-Old Male

    Introduction A 9 year-old presented to CFNC complaining of a speech delay, sensory issues, and lack of understanding where his body is in space. He has a previous diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Examination Upon examination, we found retained primitive reflexes, irregular eye movements with targets moving to the left, difficulty with coordination on the right, and diminished oxygen saturation on the left side. Treatment The patient was seen for a week consisting of 12 neurological rehabilitation sessions and a re-examination. Treatment consisted of cerebellar exercises, neurosensorimotor integration, peripheral nerve stimulation, primitive reflex remediation, red and near infrared light, whole body rotation, oculomotor movements, vestibular rehabilitation, and interactive metronome. Results After the intensive week, the patient’s mom said that he is more vocal, able to add in more Spanish words, asking for items he wants and able to express what he doesn’t want. Conclusion Patients of all ages can benefit from functional neurology and individualized neuro rehab. Functional neurology has been shown to be effective for a wide range of conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorder.   • Case Study: Concussion: 15-Year-Old Male

    Introduction A 15 year-old male presented to CFNC complaining of headaches, exhaustion, digestive issues, feeling like his brain was swelling, like he was going to pass out, and like he has the flu 24/7. His symptoms began after going to vestibular rehab for treatment of at least four concussions. Examination  Upon examination, we found a significant increase in his heart rate from 89-148bpm when changing positions from laying to standing, irregular pupillary light responses in both eyes, instability when looking at a stationary target, and a retained startle reflex. Treatment The patient was seen for an intensive week, followed by two intensive days, and then multiple telehealth follow ups. Treatment consisted of vestibular rehabilitation, autonomic nervous system retraining, oculomotor therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, Bemer therapy, red and near infrared light, blood sugar regulation, supplementation, .  Results At his last follow up, the patient reported he was completely symptom free. He is able to workout and lift five days per week, got his GED, and got a job working 25-30hr per week. Conclusion Patients of all ages can benefit from functional neurology and individualized neuro rehab.   • Case Study: Migraine: 40-Year-Old Female

    A 40-year-old presented to CFNC with complaints of dizziness rated 10/10, uncontrollable migraines rated 10/10, and shortness of breath rated 10/10. She also had complaints of numbness in the face and limbs, feeling off balance, slurring of speech, and burning sensations. Examination  The examination showed severely reduced balance, veering to the left while walking, difficulties with cerebellar testing on the left, irregular sensation on the face, and a drift of the eyes down and to the left in darkness. Treatment The patient was seen twice per week for six weeks. Treatment consisted of cerebellar therapies, balance, oculomotor therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, red and near infrared light, electrical muscle stimulation, and supplements. Results At the re-examination, the patient reported a 50% improvement since beginning treatment. She has not had any slurring of speech, shortness of breath is not as frequent, and her migraines reduced in severity and she describes them as a headache instead of a migraine episode. Dizziness is now rated 5.5/10, and headaches (not migraines) are now a 5/10. Conclusion Functional neurology has been shown to be effective for a wide range of conditions including chronic debilitating migraines.   • Case Study: Dysautonomia: 32-Year-Old Female

    A 32-year-old female presented to CFNC with complaints of tachycardia (rated as a 10/10), headaches and migraines (rated as a 8/10), dizziness (rated as a 6/10) and fatigue (rated as a 6/10). Examination  Her examination showed instability with head thrust and doll eyes, an accommodation spasm in darkness,  abnormal pupillary light reflex, and instability with divergence. Treatment Treatment consisted of two appointments per week for six weeks. Treatment consisted of Bemer therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, eye movement exercises, balance exercises, red and near infrared light therapy, and dietary modifications.  Results At the end of treatment, the patient reported a 95% improvement in symptoms. Her tachycardia was now rated as 1/10, headaches and migraines 3/10, fatigue 2/10, and dizziness 0/10. Conclusion Functional neurology has been shown to be effective for a wide range of conditions including tachycardia, migraines and dizziness. Dizziness was rated as a 6/10, anxiety 7/10, and difficulty swallowing was a 7/10. Examination  Upon examination, we found profoundly reduced balance scores, dysmetria with cerebellar tests, an accommodation spasm, and an irregular pupillary light reflex. Treatment The patient was seen twice per week for seven weeks. Treatment consisted of blood sugar regulation, neurosensorimotor integration, vestibular rehabilitation, balance exercises, cerebellar therapies, peripheral nerve stimulation, bemer therapy, and red and near infrared light therapy.  Results At the re-examination, the patient reported that his dizziness was improved and felt “well controlled,”, his ability to swallow had improved, and he had decreased anxiety! Dizziness is now rated as a 1/10, difficulty swallowing is now a 2/10, and anxiety is now a 1-2/10. Conclusion Patients of all ages can benefit from functional neurology and individualized neuro rehab. Treatment The patient was seen twice per week for eight weeks. Treatment consisted of GyroStim, neurosensorimotor integration, peripheral nerve stimulation, primitive reflex remediation, and interactive metronome.  Results At his last check in, the patient reported that he was able to graduate from OT, he had no flopping or falls, had no bathroom issues, and his behavioral and sensory issues were good!  Conclusion Patients of all ages can benefit from functional neurology and individualized neuro rehab.
