10 Steps to Help You Heal From a Concussion

Having a concussion is an unfortunate and unexpected event for millions of people every year. We know it can be difficult to navigate what to do next and where to turn. Our doctors have put together a list of their recommendations for an immediate course of action for those who have sustained a concussion.

10 Steps to help you heal from a concussion:

  1. Rule out severe and life threatening trauma. It is important to seek immediate medical attention. There are life threatening circumstances that can occur after a head injury that you don’t want to overlook.

  2. Ice your head and take anti-inflammatory supplements. Our doctors often recommend turmeric, fish oil high in DHA, fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K).

  3. Limit screen time and use of technology.

  4. Get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

  5. Avoid contact sports and intense physical activity.

  6. Avoid processed food and sugar.

  7. Reduce inflammation by eating organic, whole foods.

  8. Avoid large crowds and busy places. Sensory overload is a lot for a healing brain to tolerate.

  9. Don’t hide in a quiet dark room. Limit stimulus but don’t remove all of it.

  10. If your symptoms continue beyond 7-10 days, seek further testing with a highly trained and skilled provider. Our doctors highly recommend seeking an evaluation no matter what. Having a concussion can exponentially increase your risk for another, even if you feel like you have healed. Making sure your brain is in tip top shape after a concussion is key to reducing risk for another.
